“Translation (and reception) of Gitanjali in France"

 

Jaipur, Nov 22 .Department of European Languages, Literature and Culture Studies, University of Rajasthan is organising a literary session on “Translation (and reception) of Gitanjali in France" by Prof. Fabien Chartier. The event is organised in collaboration with Alliance Française of Jaipur (Embassy of France) on Wednesday, 30 November  at 11am. 


Prof. Chartier teaches at University of Rennes (Brittany, France). He wrote a Ph-D thesis on Rabindranath Tagore’s reception in Great Britain and France in 2000. In 2020, he edited, co-prefaced and annotated a 1632-page book on Tagore’s life and works were published by Quarto-Gallimard. He is also the co-founder and vice-President of SARI (the French Society of Activities and Research about India).


The session will revolve around how Tagore's Song Offerings was translated by André Gide. The session will also focus on important discussions linked to the translation from English to French of the 60th poem of Gitanjali: Song Offerings (originally drawn from   Shishu). The version in Hindi will also be a focal point of the session.
